Manchester United look set to finish fourth, despite Louis van Gaal not quite getting it right this season

On Saturday Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat against West Brom at Old Trafford.

It was their third successive defeat on the trot in the Premier League, yet the Red Devils look set to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Louis van Gaal’s team are now four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool with just three Premier League games remaining. The Red Devils will be lucky to make the top four this season, after not really playing that well this season in the English top-flight.

United are lucky that the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton could not find any consistency, because if they had then they would not be fourth now.

Last season Everton finished fifth and recorded a club-record total of 72 points in the Premier League. United may not even make it to that number of points this season. The way they are playing they will not.

United not being that consistent and Louis van Gaal not quite being able to fully put into effect his football philosophy and still end-up fourth illustrate the poor standard of the Premier League this season.

Hopefully next season the quality of the Premier League will be far better. The likes of Liverpool, Southampton, Tottenham and even Everton will be stronger in the next campaign.

The current top four cannot rest on their laurels, especially Manchester United, who may just scrape a place in the Champions League this season.

Will Manchester United be lucky to finish in the top four?
