Bayern Munich lost key players Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben to injury, as the Bavarians were knocked out of the German cup on penalties in the semi-finals by Dortmund, after the game had been drawn 1-1 in normal and extra-time.
Lewandowski had given Bayern the lead in the first half, only for Dortmund to equalise in the 75th minute through Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Dortmund was reduced to ten men in extra-time, as Kevin Kampl was dismissed.
However, despite being a man down Dortmund won the penalty shootout 2-0. However, the double blow for Pep Guardiola’s side was the fact that Lewandowski and Robben both went off injured.
Robben made an appearance of just 16 minutes, but limped off the field. The Dutchman had been missing from the Bayern squad for the last month.
The former-Real Madrid winger is an influential player for Guardiola’s side, as he has scored 19 times this season in all competitions from his wing position.
Lewandowski is Bayern’s main attacking threat and has found the net 23 times this season. The Poland international was taken to hospital with a head injury following a collision with Dortmund ‘keeper Mitchell Langerak.
Both players are now doubtful for next week’s Champions League first leg semi-final clash with Barcelona.
The Bavarians will need their entire squad fit to face the Catalan giants as they are in fantastic form.
Their fearsome front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar have scored an outrageous 102 between them in all competitions this season.
