Veteran Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has been busy with the clubs chequebook this summer

This summer has been one of upheaval at Manchester United, as boss Louis van Gaal attempts to build a squad capable of improving on last season’s fourth place finish and plots a challenge for the Premier League title.

Busy

The veteran Dutchman has been busy with the club chequebook this summer. In have come Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Mateo Darmian and Sergio Romero. For me all five signings are quality ones and will improve the United team in the new campaign.

The Old Trafford exit door has also been busy with Nani, Robin van Persie, Tom Cleverley and Angelo Henriquez all heading for pastures new.

Stronger

The United squad is definitely stronger than last season, even if the Red Devils do appear to be slightly short in attack.

United have been crying out for a quality central midfielder for years, with Michael Carrick now injury-prone and aging. This summer the Red Devils have brought in not one, but two quality central midfielders in Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin.

The former has won every honour the game has to offer and is an incredibly intelligent footballer. The German has the ability to control the tempo of the game and no doubt will do so in the Premier League.

Schneiderlin has proved to be a very assured and cool Premier League midfielder in the past few seasons and the Frenchman will no doubt be a successful signing for the Red Devils.

Short

United have strengthened some of their weak areas immensely, but they are now short of strikers. If Wayne Rooney gets injured then they only have rookie James Wilson in reserve.

The title may just be a stretch too far for Van Gaal’s men in the new campaign, but they should be far closer to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City in the league table courtesy of their big spending this summer.

  1. Manchester United have made some great signing this season but it’s still early for them to win the Premier League. The players need time to gel.. In addition Chelsea and Manchester City already have a strong and winning squad.. It’s easier for them to build on their successes…
