Reportedly Chelsea’s chase for Everton defender John Stones continues and the way in which Everton a once powerhouse of English football is being talked about is patronising to say the least.
The Toffees are often described in terms of being a smaller club than the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, yet in the history of English football they have a far bigger history than the nouvre riche.
In fact the Toffees have won more titles than both of the blues, yet they seem to be talked about like a club who should grateful that these so called ‘big clubs’ are offering big money for their key players.
The difference between rich club and big club needs to be identified here. Trophies-wise Everton are still the fifth most successful club in the history of English football, despite the Merseysider’s receiving absolutely no fresh investment in the club for years.
Everton have been described by one leading football academic as ‘a sleeping giant’. That sounds like a precise description at the moment.
The Toffees have not been lucky enough to have been taken over by a foreign sugar daddy, but the Merseysider’s have a proud history.
Spanish boss Roberto Martinez is currently attempting to wake the sleeping giants and he will not be able to do that if the club keep selling their best players. Centre-back Stones is one of the brightest young English talents.
However the sad fact is that money talks, but Everton are a proud club and they should not be bullied by these so called ‘bigger clubs’.
