Premier League title hopefuls Manchester United were frustrated by Newcastle in the early kick-off on Saturday by a goalless draw.

In truth United huffed and puffed, but could not quite blow the United house down. Newcastle ‘keeper Tim Krul pulled off a number of good saves to deny the Red Devils a vital opener.

The home side struggled to create much in the opening stages, but captain Wayne Rooney did have a goal disallowed for offside. Louis van Gaal’s side did find some urgency towards the end of the game, but it was too late to find a winner.

Newcastle will be far happier with the draw and especially the clean sheet, which were few and far between for the Magpies last season.

The central defensive partnership of Chancel Mbemba and captain Fabricio Coloccini produced relative solid displays.

Everybody connected with the Red Devils will know that they will have to produce far more going forward if they are going to mount a serious Premier League title challenge.

Dutch international winger Memphis Depay has looked the bright spot for United, but despite his efforts he could not find a way past the Newcastle backline.

United fans will be concerned about the performances of star striker and captain Wayne Rooney, who has struggled to find his top form this season so far.

The Red Devils have been linked with signing a new striker before the transfer window shuts and after recent performances in the Premier League Van Gaal’s team may just need extra firepower to compete at the top of the table this season.

Does Manchester United need to sign a new striker?
