Colombian striker Jackson Martinez is set to complete a £24.8million move to Spanish club Atletico Madrid from FC Porto.

The 28-year-old revealed he was heading for the Spanish capital last week and Los Rojiblancos have now confirmed the deal themselves. The striker will sign a four-year deal at the Vicente Calderon.

Martinez was away on international duty with his national side at the Copa America, but is now likely to be able to complete the move after their exit against Argentina in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The striker has been prolific in his three seasons in Portuguese football, having scored over 20 times in three consecutives campaigns in the Portuguese top-flight. Last season he also found the net seven times in eight Champions League appearances.

Martinez had been heavily linked with a move to Premier League Arsenal. AC Milan were also reported to be in negotiations to sign the striker, but the move fell through it. However it seems that the striker will be plying his trade in La Liga next season.

He will be seen as a replacement for Croatian international striker Mario Mandzukic, who recently moved to Italian giants Juventus.

Martinez is a completely different type of player to the Croatian and may fit into Atleti’s style of player better than Mandzukic.

The Colombian will could be a good foil for the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres next season, as they once again attempt to unsettle the big two of Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga.

Will Jackson Martinez be successful in Spain?
