According to Sky Sports, Valencia and Argentina centre-back Nicolas Otamendi is having a medical at Manchester City later today ahead of a reported £31.7million move.
Yesterday we reported that City were going to strengthen their squad before the transfer window shuts and it looks like that strengthening has moved one step closer with this news.
Manchester City have started the campaign in fine fettle, winning both their games and keeping clean sheets. Captain Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala have formed a solid partnership at the centre of the Citizens defence.
Big money signing Mangala struggled to reach his peak form in his debut campaign, but has looked more confident in the opening games of the campaign.
Reports that Mangala may be involved in a swap deal for Otamendi now seem wide of the mark, as it looks like City are set to complete a straight cash deal for the Argentinian.
Otamendi only moved to Los Ches in 2014 from FC Porto, but he has impressed immensely for both club and country since. The 27-year-old has 25 caps for his country and will be vying with Mangala for a spot in the City defence alongside captain Vincent Kompany.
Otamendi had previously been linked with Manchester City’s arch-rivals Manchester United, but it seems his future now lies on the blue side of Manchester.
It may not be the only deal that City concludes before the transfer window shuts, as the Citizens are still being heavily linked with a move for Wolfsburg and Belgium playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.
Reports from various sources suggest that a bid of around £55million could secure the former-Chelsea stars signature, although it remains to be seen if those reports are accurate.
