Newcastle have completed their first transfer of the summer by signing Dutch international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from PSV Eindhoven for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £14million. The midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Magpies.
Wijnaldum captained PSV as they lifted the Eredivisie title last season. The versatile midfielder’s goal tally of 14 was obviously a big contributing factor.
His impressive performances for the club from Eindhoven earned Wijnaldum the Dutch Player of the Year award last season.
The former-Feyenoord star has been linked with a move to the north east for much of the summer and the Toon Army will be delighted that their club have finally strengthened their thin squad.
Wijnaldum has good experience for a 24-year-old having played in European competition with PSV. He has also won 19 caps for Oranje.
According to Sky Sports, Wijnaldum could be joined at Newcastle by highly-rated young Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The striker is currently at Belgian outfit Anderlecht and fired home 23 goals in 44 appearances for the club. It is being reported that a fee has been agreed between the clubs.
The 20-year-old is regarded as a hot young prospect and signing him would be something of a coup for the Magpies this summer.
Mitrovic impressed in high-profile Champions League games last season, scoring against German giants Borussia Dortmund and also against Premier League Arsenal in a 3-3 draw in the group stages of the competition.
Recently Magpies boss Steve McClaren claimed that his club could bring in up to five players this summer and these two signings should definitely excite Newcastle fans.
