It has been in the air for quite some time but now it’s official, Juventus are Italian champions for the fourth time in a row.
Yesterday’s 1-0 win against Sampdoria increased the gap over second placed Lazio to 17 points that mathematically closes the title race.
It’s quite a rarity that the Italian Serie A is won four matches prior to the end of the season, but it hasn’t been as easy as it may seem for Juventus.
Roma made a strong start to the season, at one point they were even being touted as favourites to clinch this year’s Serie A title, due to a long run of positive results and their style of play.
Roma’s first setback was a 3-2 loss against Juventus that would result in the start of various setbacks, which would become a constant in the second part of the season.
On the other hand Juventus maintained a certain level of consistency that allowed them to increase the gap between Roma and themselves.
Many critics consider this victory to be a great achievement by Juventus as their talisman coach, Antonio Conte, had left them unexpectedly just a few weeks before the start of the season.
Many were convinced that Conte was the main reason for Juventus’ recent successes and that his departure would have led them to a drought in silverware.
Not only was this not the case but they also managed a better run in the Champions League, as they have already managed to achieve a semi-final spot, their first since 2003.
These achievements clearly highlight the strength of the squad and the high level of organization at the Juventus helm.
Surely this victory won’t satisfy their thirst for domestic trophies as another league title next season would allow them to match their record of winning five Serie A titles in a row.
